Here is the thing about being told you are wrong about an album on the internet. You are not going to change your mind. You are, however, going to listen to the album again, at which point you have technically lost the argument regardless of what you conclude, because the other person got you to do homework.

So: Kid A. I said on episode 88 that it was the sound of four men discovering a synthesiser and immediately forgetting how to write a chorus. I stand by roughly sixty percent of that. What I will concede, eight years later and with considerably worse hearing, is that the back half of this record is doing something I did not have the patience for at thirty-one.

The first four tracks are still a man gargling into a Speak & Spell. I need that on the record. But somewhere around 'How to Disappear Completely' the album stops performing its own difficulty and just becomes sad, and sad is something Radiohead is genuinely excellent at. The strings on that track were apparently recorded to deliberately go slightly out of tune with each other. That is either the most pretentious thing I have ever typed or the reason it works, and I have not decided which.

What I keep coming back to is 'Idioteque'. It samples a 1976 computer music piece by Paul Lansky called 'mild und leise', which Thom Yorke found on a bargain-bin vinyl compilation. A forty-year-old academic synthesis experiment became the drum loop on one of the biggest rock albums of the century because a guy was digging through a pile of records nobody wanted. That is the entire premise of this show and I did not notice it the first time.

Tim thinks I have been got at. Tim is correct. I am still not covering it on the main feed — the last time I picked something I had softened on we got fourteen emails about integrity.
